Australia’s Coach Supports Smith for Upcoming India Test Series
Andrew McDonald, the coach of the Australian cricket team, has expressed his confidence in veteran batter Steve Smith, stating that it would require an extraordinary performance to replace him as the opener for the upcoming ICC World Test Championship against India.
Despite Smith’s recent performance of just 171 runs at an average of 28.50 since his promotion to the opener position, and a contribution of only 51 runs in the recent 2-0 series victory over New Zealand, McDonald remains optimistic.
Ricky Ponting, an Australian cricket legend, has also shown his support for Smith, predicting his inclusion in the 15-player squad for the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in the USA and Caribbean. McDonald agrees, stating that Smith will be a tough player to replace in the World Test Championship.
McDonald highlighted Australia’s recent success in the Test arena, which has seen them rise to second place in the World Test Championship standings. He anticipates Smith to continue being a crucial part of the team in the upcoming five-match Test series against India for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in November.
McDonald acknowledges that changes may be necessary, but given the team’s recent 2-0 victory and an impressive 12-Test run with eight wins, he believes it will take something special to infiltrate the current group.
Despite the ongoing debate about Smith’s position, McDonald praises Smith’s problem-solving abilities and his readiness to face challenges. He expects Smith to work on his weaknesses against the new-ball and come back stronger in the India series.
Smith’s determination is evident as he walks away from New Zealand with 51 runs under his belt in tough conditions. McDonald believes this will motivate him for the upcoming challenge against India.
Smith achieved his 31st Test century on Day 2 against India in the ICC World Test Championship Final 2023.
McDonald defends Smith against any criticism of his performance as an opener. He believes it’s premature to judge Smith’s capabilities in his new position after just four Test matches and considers any such judgement to be unfair.
