England Enlists Manchester City Psychologist for Men’s T20 World Cup Campaign
Manchester City’s renowned psychologist, Young, who has been instrumental in the football club’s four consecutive Premier League victories in recent years, has been roped in by the England cricket team. Prior to his stint with Manchester City, Young was part of the England cricket team, supervising the senior Men’s team from 2016 to 2020.
Young has now rejoined the England cricket team for the T20I series against Pakistan and is expected to stay until the conclusion of the Men’s T20 World Cup.
Matthew Mott, England’s white-ball coach, is confident that Young’s presence, who was part of the team during their historic ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup victory in 2019, will enhance communication within the team.
“Young has been a part of our team before and has always been a great ally in conveying my messages clearly,” Mott said.
“Having someone slightly detached from the squad is beneficial in ensuring the messages are delivered effectively… He’s still performing other roles, but we have him for this series and the beginning of the World Cup,” he added.
Following England’s lackluster performance in the recently concluded Men’s Cricket World Cup in India, Mott is keen on adopting a more open approach.
“After a setback like we’ve had, it’s not just ‘business as usual’. We need to redefine our team dynamics,” Mott commented on England’s performance in India.
“As a team, we’ve decided to be more open during our training sessions, to assist each other more. In India, we were all guilty of being somewhat insular and trying to solve problems individually. We’ve now committed to being more open and vulnerable as a group to support each other,” he concluded.
