Former Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh took to social media platform X on Tuesday to address a fan’s critique regarding the quality of Hindi cricket commentary. The fan, identified as a fervent cricket enthusiast, had posted a comprehensive video highlighting his concerns over the state of commentary during recent tournaments, including the IPL and the Champions Trophy.
The video, which quickly gained traction online, criticized the current commentary panels for deviating from the technical analysis that once characterized Hindi cricket broadcasts. The fan reminisced about the golden era of Hindi commentary, mentioning legends like Maninder Singh, Arun Lal, and Sushil Doshi, who were known for their insightful and educational commentary.
Harbhajan, who has been part of the commentary team alongside other former cricketers such as Virender Sehwag, Navjot Singh Sidhu, Shikhar Dhawan, Suresh Raina, Robin Uthappa, and Ambati Rayudu, responded to the criticism with a message of acknowledgment and commitment to improvement. ‘Thanks for the input. We will work on it,’ Harbhajan stated, indicating a willingness to take the feedback seriously.
The fan’s critique included specific examples of commentary that he felt lacked depth, such as the repetitive use of field positions and bowling strategies without deeper analysis. ‘The fielder has taken a fine leg, a square leg, a deep mid-wicket. So, the bowler will bowl a short ball here,’ the fan quoted, illustrating his point about the superficial nature of some current commentary.
This isn’t the first time Harbhajan has faced criticism over Hindi commentary. During the Champions Trophy, following India’s victory over Pakistan, another fan labeled the Hindi commentary as ‘cringiest.’ Harbhajan’s response then was more defensive, stating, ‘Wah Angrej ki Aulaad. Shame on you, Apni भाषा bolne aur sun k fakr mehsoos hona chahiye,’ emphasizing pride in speaking and listening to one’s own language.
The ongoing discussion about the quality of Hindi cricket commentary reflects broader concerns within the cricket community about maintaining the educational and analytical aspects of the game’s broadcast. As the IPL continues and more cricket events are on the horizon, the spotlight on commentary quality is likely to intensify, pushing broadcasters to reassess their approach to engaging and informing fans.
