KOLKATA – “Touching god” is worth a day in police custody and a stadium ban for the rest of the IPL season, according to 18-year-old Rituparno Pakhira, who made headlines after invading the pitch during the IPL 2025 opener at Eden Gardens.
The high school student, who scaled the stadium fence and sprinted across the field to meet his idol Virat Kohli, has revealed the touching words exchanged during their brief encounter before security intervened.
“The moment I touched his feet, Virat Kohli sir asked my name and said, ‘Jaldi se bhaag jaa‘ (run away fast),” Pakhira recounted. “He even asked the security personnel not to hit me. I’ll cherish those few seconds forever.”
The teenager’s impulsive act of devotion came with serious consequences. Authorities arrested Pakhira and charged him under multiple BNS sections, including criminal trespass, application of criminal force, and reckless action endangering the safety of others. He was subsequently placed in police custody for 24 hours.
Additionally, Eden Gardens officials have imposed a season-long ban, preventing Pakhira from attending any further IPL matches at the iconic venue this season.
The incident occurred during Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s match against Kolkata Knight Riders, where Kohli’s popularity was on full display despite playing against the home team. Security protocols at the stadium are now under review following the breach.
Cricket analysts have noted that while player safety remains paramount, Kohli’s compassionate response to the young fan highlights the human connection between sports icons and their devoted followers.
When contacted about the incident, BCCI officials reiterated that pitch invasions compromise player safety and security protocols must be strictly followed by all spectators regardless of their intentions.
Despite the legal troubles and restrictions, Pakhira maintains that meeting his hero was worth the consequences, describing the moment as “the most memorable day” of his life.
