NEW DELHI: The IPL 2025 season has unveiled a roster of big-name players who have failed to meet the high expectations set by their hefty price tags. Here, we delve into the performances of these cricketers who, despite their renown and substantial investments by their franchises, are yet to shine on the field.
Rishabh Pant (Lucknow Super Giants) – Bought for a staggering Rs 27 crore and entrusted with the captaincy, Pant has had a torrid start to the season. In three matches, he has scored just 15 runs at an average of 5.00, a far cry from the expectations set for the flamboyant wicket-keeper batsman.
Rohit Sharma (Mumbai Indians) – Retained for Rs 16.30 crore, the former captain led Mumbai Indians to five IPL titles. However, his form this season has been concerning, managing only 21 runs in three games at a low average of 7.00.
Abhishek Sharma (Sunrisers Hyderabad) – Known for his explosive starts, Abhishek has struggled to ignite this season. Retained for Rs 14 crore, he has scored just 31 runs in three matches at an average of 10.33.
Venkatesh Iyer (Kolkata Knight Riders) – After a stellar IPL 2024 where he scored 370 runs including four half-centuries, Iyer was re-bought for Rs 23.75 crore. Yet, he has managed only 9 runs in three matches, showing a dip in form with an average of 3.00.
Rinku Singh (Kolkata Knight Riders) – Famous for hitting five sixes in an over during IPL 2023, Rinku has been unable to replicate that magic this season. Retained for Rs 13 crore, he has scored a mere 29 runs in three matches.
Yashasvi Jaiswal (Rajasthan Royals) – The young aggressive opener, retained for Rs 18 crore, has been unable to make an impact, scoring only 34 runs in three matches with an average of 11.33.
MS Dhoni (Chennai Super Kings) – At 43, Dhoni remains a legend but his form has dipped. Retained under the ‘uncapped player’ rule for Rs 4 crore, his 46 runs in three matches have not been enough to help CSK, who have managed just one win.
