Jitesh Sharma’s Transformation at RCB: Dinesh Karthik’s Mentorship Proves Invaluable

BENGALURU – Jitesh Sharma, the dynamic wicketkeeper-batsman for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), showcased his prowess in a recent match against Mumbai Indians. Entering the crease at No. 6 in the 16th over, Sharma wasted no time in making an impact. He unleashed a boundary followed by a six against the formidable Trent Boult, amassing 24 runs off just eight deliveries from the New Zealand pacer. Sharma’s aggressive approach continued as he capitalized on a loose delivery from Jasprit Bumrah, dispatching it over the long-on boundary during his unbeaten knock of 40 off 19 balls.

Sharma’s impressive display of shot-making has drawn significant attention, highlighting his value as a versatile player. Acquired by RCB for a hefty sum of Rs 11 crore this season, Sharma had previously made a name for himself with Punjab Kings in 2022. However, it is at RCB where he has found a mentor in the experienced Dinesh Karthik. The 31-year-old has been under Karthik’s wing, and the results are evident as Sharma transitions into a finisher role, much like his mentor.

Having retired from the game last season, Karthik has taken up the role of RCB’s batting coach. During the off-season, he worked extensively with Sharma, helping him refine his skills. Ahead of RCB’s home game against Delhi Capitals, Sharma spoke candidly about Karthik’s influence on his game. “It’s been a great journey till now. During the off-season, I worked hard with him (Karthik). The shots I am playing right now are a replica of what he used to play. He is trying to turn me into a new player because he believes that I can play all around the circle,” Sharma revealed.

Reflecting on his performance in the 2024 season, Sharma admitted to facing mental challenges that affected his game. “Last year’s performance was because of mental issues. I was not mentally in the game because I was thinking ahead and about the future. When I met Dinesh bhai, he told me that it’s a human error. It’s not rocket science; it happens to everyone,” he explained. This insight from Karthik has been instrumental in helping Sharma overcome his mental blocks.

Sharma also emphasized the importance of confidence in his training regime. “My confidence doesn’t rely on the score. It always depends on my process and how I train. It’s because, if I have confidence in the end result, then the variables go up and down. So, I mostly keep my confidence high during practice,” he added. This approach to training and mental preparation is a testament to the holistic development Sharma is undergoing under Karthik’s guidance.
