Kwena Maphaka: U19 Cricket World Cup’s Player of the Tournament
South African prodigy, Kwena Maphaka, has been declared the Player of the Tournament at the ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup 2024.
Maphaka outshone competitors Ubaid Shah, Saumy Pandey, Musheer Khan, Jewel Andrew, Hugh Weibgen, Uday Saharan, and his own teammate Steve Stolk, to clinch the title.
The South African speedster, who broke multiple records at the tournament, claimed 21 wickets, just one shy of the tournament record set by Bangladesh’s Enamul Haque Jr in 2014.
At just 17, Maphaka set a record of his own by becoming the first player to achieve three five-wicket hauls in a single edition of the tournament.
Maphaka now joins the prestigious list of players who have been named Player of the Tournament at the men’s event in the past.
In the previous edition too, the award was bagged by a South African — Dewald Brevis, who set a record for the highest run tally in the tournament.
