Michael Jones: The Scottish Cricket Star’s Memorable Encounter with Virat Kohli
Scottish cricketer Michael Jones is gearing up for his latest appearance in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, fueled by a memorable encounter with Indian cricket legend Virat Kohli.
As a top-order batter, Jones is optimistic about Scotland’s chances in Group A, where they will face previous champions Australia and England in the West Indies.
This tournament marks Jones’ third experience in the T20 big leagues. He plans to draw upon a significant conversation with the Indian captain to guide Scotland into the Super 8s.
“During the 2021 T20 World Cup in Dubai, I had the opportunity to converse with Virat and KL Rahul post our match against India. They were incredibly gracious,” Jones reminisces.
Entering the Indian dressing room as a Scottish player, particularly after a defeat, can be intimidating. However, Jones found the Indian players to be down-to-earth individuals who are not just immensely talented and hardworking, but also genuinely pleasant.
He recalls, “A group of us ended up discussing cricket with Kohli. It was surreal to have a batting conversation with arguably one of the greatest cricketers.”
Kohli shared insights about his training regimen, his mental preparation, and his strategic approach to different bowlers. This conversation left the Scottish players inspired and eager to practice.
Jones’ aspiration to play international cricket dates back to his teenage years when he contacted Cricket Scotland to declare his eligibility. His mother Dianne, born in Aberdeen, made him eligible to represent Scotland.
Now 26, Jones was part of the team that reached the Super 12s in 2021 and played a crucial role in Scotland’s historic victory over the West Indies. Despite the increasing expectations, Jones is determined to enjoy every moment of the tournament.
“Growing up, I dreamt of playing in a World Cup. To do it against England and Australia in Barbados is an incredible experience,” Jones shares.
Off the field, Jones is excited about his first trip to the Caribbean. He looks forward to ‘Watty’s Tours’, led by spinner Mark Watts, which promises a mix of entertainment and cultural experiences.
On the field, Scotland is entering a new era under the leadership of head coach Doug Watson. With former captain Kyle Coetzer retired, Jones is ready to step up and face the world’s best cricketers.
“I thrive under pressure. There’s no bigger challenge than playing against England and Australia. While there are no guarantees of a good performance, I relish playing in big games. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and making it through would be an incredible achievement for us all,” Jones concludes.
