In the high-stakes environment of the Indian Premier League (IPL), Chennai Super Kings (CSK) find themselves grappling with a strategic puzzle concerning the batting position of their iconic captain, MS Dhoni. The team’s recent performances have sparked debates and drawn criticism, particularly after Dhoni’s appearances at No. 9 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru and No. 7 against Rajasthan Royals.
Against Rajasthan Royals, Dhoni walked in to bat when CSK needed 54 runs off the last 25 balls. Despite his efforts, scoring 16 runs off 11 balls with one four and one six, the team fell short by six runs. A spectacular catch by Shimron Hetmyer at deep mid-wicket ended Dhoni’s innings, leaving CSK needing 19 runs from the final five deliveries.
CSK head coach Stephen Fleming shed light on the situation, emphasizing Dhoni’s physical condition as a key factor in his batting strategy. ‘It’s a time thing. It’s MS who judges it. His body, his knees aren’t what they used to be. He’s moving okay but there’s still an attrition aspect to it. He can’t bat 10 overs running full stick,’ Fleming explained. He further noted that Dhoni assesses his contribution based on the game’s situation, opting to bat earlier if the match is in the balance.
Fleming also highlighted Dhoni’s invaluable role in leadership and wicketkeeping, suggesting that his strategic deployment is crucial for the team’s success. ‘To throw him in at 9, 10 overs… he’s actually never done that. So, from around 13, 14 overs he’s looking to go depending on the situation,’ he added.
Reflecting on CSK’s performance in the tournament so far, which includes a win against Mumbai Indians followed by two consecutive losses, Fleming pointed out the team’s struggles in the Powerplay phases. ‘It’s probably the two Powerplays. Our Powerplay with the ball went for best part of 80 runs and we were only able to manage mid-40s or early-40s. That’s the big difference,’ he said. Additionally, he acknowledged the team’s fielding lapses compared to the outstanding performance by Rajasthan Royals.
As CSK navigates through this new three-year cycle post the mega IPL auction, the team’s strategy around Dhoni’s batting will continue to be a focal point of interest and analysis among fans and cricket pundits alike.
