Phil Simmons, Ex-West Indies Star, Joins Papua New Guinea’s T20 World Cup Coaching Team

Phil Simmons, the former West Indies all-rounder and esteemed coach, has been appointed as a specialist coach for Papua New Guinea’s team for the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.

Simmons will be assisting head coach and former Zimbabwe international, Tatenda Taibu, by bringing his extensive experience in Caribbean conditions to the table for the ninth edition of the T20 World Cup.

Simmons, who has played over 160 matches for the West Indies, is also recognized for his successful coaching career post-retirement. He led the West Indies to their second T20 World Cup victory in India in 2016.

Having previously coached Zimbabwe’s men’s team in 2004 and 2005, Simmons has also had coaching stints with Ireland and Afghanistan. He was the head coach of the West Indies during their less than stellar T20 World Cup campaign in Australia in 2022.

Simmons aims to utilize his understanding of Caribbean conditions to benefit Papua New Guinea’s players during their second appearance at the T20 World Cup.

Simmons expressed his excitement about returning to the Caribbean and sharing his experience with the team. He also mentioned his anticipation about returning to his home, Trinidad.

Simmons has already begun working with the PNG team in St Kitts, and he is impressed by the energy and enthusiasm of the players.

He praised the team’s energy and the lively atmosphere, attributing it to the head coach, Taibu, and the players’ efforts.

Papua New Guinea’s first match at the T20 World Cup is against Simmons’ former team, the West Indies, in Guyana on June 2.
