Rohit Sharma Elucidates India’s T20 World Cup 2024 Squad Selection Strategy
This week, the Indian cricket team announced their 15-member squad and four travelling reserves for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024. Skipper Rohit Sharma and chief selector Ajit Agarkar held a press conference to shed light on the rationale behind their selection decisions.
Despite the majority of the squad being predictable picks, the exclusion of Shubman Gill and Rinku Singh raised eyebrows. Agarkar described these omissions as some of the “toughest decisions” the selectors had to make, emphasizing that the players had done “nothing wrong” and their exclusion was purely based on the team’s desired combinations.

Agarkar expressed, “The omission of Rinku Singh from the first 15 was probably the toughest decision we had to make. He, along with Shubman Gill, has done nothing wrong. It’s all about the team combinations. We have included a couple of wrist spinners to provide Rohit with more options. It’s unfortunate, but he’s in the reserves, which shows how close he was to being in the 15. However, at the end of the day, we can only select 15 players for the squad.”
Rohit Sharma smashed 31 sixes in the World Cup.
The inclusion of two wrist spinners, Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav, means that India’s 15-member squad boasts four spinners, with Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel rounding out the quartet. Rohit didn’t delve into the specifics but hinted that the tournament’s morning games influenced this decision.
“I don’t want to reveal too much as I’m sure opposition captains will be listening,” he said. “I wanted more spinners, given the conditions. Matches start at 10-10.30 in the morning, which involves a technical aspect. I wanted four spinners and three seamers, and with Hardik in the team, we achieve balance. With two spinners being all-rounders, and two being attacking spinners, we have a balanced spin department. We can decide who to play based on the opposition’s composition.”
