Shahid Afridi Joins as Ambassador for ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has revealed the legendary Pakistani all-rounder, Shahid Afridi, as the newest addition to the illustrious list of Ambassadors for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024. The tournament is set to commence on 1 June in the USA and West Indies.

With six T20 World Cups under his belt, including two as captain, Afridi was instrumental in Pakistan’s 2009 victory, earning the Player of the Match title in the final at Lord’s. Afridi will participate in various promotional activities for the World Cup and provide expert commentary through a series of guest columns.

Shahid Afridi, ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2009 winner, expressed his excitement:

“The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup holds a special place in my heart. From being named Player of the Tournament in the inaugural edition to hoisting the trophy in 2009, some of my most cherished career moments have come from this stage.

“T20 World Cups have consistently grown in stature over the years, and I am delighted to be a part of this edition, which promises more teams, more matches, and unprecedented drama.

“The India v Pakistan fixture on 9 June is something I am particularly looking forward to. It is one of the most intense rivalries in sports, and New York will provide a fitting backdrop for this epic clash between two formidable teams.”

Claire Furlong, ICC General Manager – Marketing and Communications, added:

“Shahid has competed in six ICC Men’s T20 World Cups, including two as captain, and delivered a Player of the Match performance in the 2009 victory. He is the perfect addition to our all-star Ambassador team.

“A fan favourite globally, Shahid, along with Yuvraj Singh, Chris Gayle, and eight-time Olympic gold-medallist Usain Bolt, will bring fans closer to the event in what is set to be the biggest T20 World Cup ever.”

The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup will run from 1-29 June, with co-hosts USA facing Canada in the opening match at Grand Prairie Stadium in Texas. The tournament will feature 55 matches played by 20 teams across nine venues, culminating in the final on 29 June in Barbados, promising the grandest cricket spectacle ever.

The historic first match at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium will take place on 3 June between the 2014 champions Sri Lanka and South Africa. New York will host eight matches featuring 10 teams. Tickets and hospitality packages are available at tickets.t20worldcup.com or via email at [email protected].
