NEW DELHI: Shreyas Iyer announced his arrival as Punjab Kings’ new captain with a match-winning unbeaten 97 and shrewd leadership that guided his team to a nail-biting 11-run victory over Gujarat Titans in their IPL 2025 opener at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday.
Making his debut in Punjab’s red jersey, Iyer looked completely at home despite losing the toss and being put in to bat first. “I would have chosen to field as well,” Iyer admitted at the toss, displaying the calm demeanor that would characterize his leadership throughout the match.
Iyer’s masterclass with the bat formed the backbone of Punjab Kings’ formidable total of 243/5 – the highest score of the tournament so far. His innings, studded with 8 fours and 5 sixes across 58 deliveries, showcased both power and finesse as he dismantled Gujarat’s bowling attack.
What stood out most was Iyer’s selflessness in the final over. Sitting on 97* with just six balls remaining, Iyer approached partner Shashank Singh (44* off 17 balls) with clear instructions to focus on team runs rather than his personal milestone. The cameras caught their brief conversation before Shashank proceeded to hammer five boundaries off Mohammed Siraj’s over to amplify Punjab’s total.
“Getting 97 not out in the first match and that too in the opening game of the season for us is the icing on the cake,” Iyer said after the match. “I got a four the first ball I faced and it got me going. That flick six off Rabada was special too.”
In response, Gujarat Titans mounted a spirited chase that kept spectators on the edge of their seats until the final over. Sai Sudharsan’s elegant 74, combined with contributions from Shubman Gill (33) and Jos Buttler (54), kept Titans in the hunt. Sherfane Rutherford’s late blitz of 46 threatened to snatch victory, but Punjab’s bowlers held their nerve to restrict Gujarat to 232/5.
Iyer’s tactical acumen was particularly evident when he followed Arshdeep Singh’s advice about the ball reversing slightly. The strategic change in bowling approach resulted in Sudharsan’s crucial wicket, effectively breaking Gujarat’s momentum.
“Arshdeep played an important role,” Iyer acknowledged. “He came in and said the ball is actually reversing a bit so the saliva on the ball is helping the bowlers. He got Sai and it helped us turn the tide.”
The victory carries special significance for Punjab Kings, who remain in pursuit of their first IPL championship since the tournament’s inception in 2008. Iyer’s leadership style has already made an impression, with the captain emphasizing collaborative decision-making.
“Before the season started we left no stone unturned. Everyone chipped in with what we can execute on the field and it wasn’t just me talking,” Iyer revealed, highlighting his inclusive approach. “We look to carry forward the momentum into the other games as well.”
The win positions Punjab Kings perfectly at the start of their campaign, with fans particularly excited about the composed leadership Iyer brings to a franchise that has often struggled with consistency.
Punjab Kings will next face Lucknow Super Giants on April 1 at the Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow, where Iyer will aim to continue his impressive start to life as captain.
