Shubman Gill, who has been grappling with health issues, was unable to participate in India’s inaugural World Cup match against Australia in Chennai.
Shubman Gill to Stay in Chennai
On Monday, India announced that the right-handed batsman will continue to stay in Chennai, rather than accompanying the team to Delhi for the next World Cup match.
Official Statement on Gill’s Health
The official statement read, “Shubman Gill, Team India’s batter, will not be joining the team in Delhi for the match scheduled on 9th October 2023.”
“The opener, who was absent from the team’s first ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 match against Australia in Chennai, will also miss the upcoming fixture against Afghanistan in Delhi on the 11th of October.”
“Gill will remain in Chennai under the medical team’s supervision.”
Gill’s Stellar Performance in ODI
Shubman Gill has been one of the top performers for India in recent One Day Internationals (ODIs), climbing the MRF Tyres ODI Batter Rankings to the second spot, trailing only behind Pakistan’s captain Babar Azam.
Possible Replacement for Gill
With Gill’s absence, it is likely that the young talent, Ishan Kishan, will get another opportunity to open the innings alongside captain Rohit Sharma.
