Sri Lanka Gears Up to Host West Indies in White-Ball Series this June
Having recently qualified for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024, to be held in Bangladesh, Sri Lanka is set to use the upcoming white-ball series as a crucial preparation for the Women’s T20 Asia Cup. The Asian sides will clash in Sri Lanka in July.
Current Standings in the ICC Women’s Championship 2022-25
The West Indies’ tour of Sri Lanka will kick off with a three-match ICC Women’s Championship ODI series, all of which are scheduled to take place in Galle.
The ODI series offers vital IWC points that are key to securing direct qualification for the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup in 2025. The top five teams, along with the host nation India, will qualify directly. The remaining teams will vie for their place in a qualifier.
The ICC Women’s #T20WorldCup 2024 in Bangladesh is set to begin on 3 October, with the final scheduled for 20 October. More details can be found here.
In the 2022-25 IWC standings, West Indies currently hold the No.7 spot with 14 points from 15 games, while Sri Lanka trails closely at No.8 with 14 points from 18 games.
Following the ODI leg, both teams will compete in a three-match T20I series in Hambantota.
This series will mark Sri Lanka’s first bilateral clash after their triumphant return from the Women’s T20 World Cup Qualifier, where they secured both the tournament victory and qualification for the global event.
Chamari Athapaththu’s century guided Sri Lanka to victory in the final of the Women’s T20WC Qualifier 2024. They remained unbeaten throughout the tournament and clinched the final by defeating Scotland, who also qualified for the T20 World Cup, by 68 runs.
The West Indies had a successful tour of Pakistan in April-May, registering a series sweep in the 50-over games and a 4-1 win in the T20I leg.
The last bilateral contest between the West Indies and Sri Lanka took place in 2017, where the West Indies dominated Sri Lanka in both T20Is and ODIs.
