NEW DELHI: In a tactical move that has stirred much debate, Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill opted to field first after winning the toss against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in their intense IPL 2024 encounter on Wednesday. The defending champions made a significant change to their lineup, bringing in Arshad Khan in place of their pace spearhead Kagiso Rabada, who was notably absent due to personal commitments.
During the toss, Gill elaborated on the decision, stating, “We’ll bowl first. The pitch looks promising and typically doesn’t change much throughout the match. Our strategy revolves around reducing unforced errors and sharpening key aspects of our game. Unfortunately, Kagiso will miss out today due to personal reasons, so we’ve decided to give Arshad Khan a chance.”
Kagiso Rabada, known for his searing pace, reached a top speed of 155.28 kmph earlier in the season against Punjab Kings, making his absence a significant talking point. On the other side, RCB, playing on their home turf for the first time this season, maintained an unchanged playing XI. Captain Rajat Patidar expressed a preference to bowl first but appeared optimistic about his team’s composition and the home crowd’s support.
“We would have liked to bowl first as well, given the newness of the surface. It looks firm and is expected to remain consistent. The confidence in our players’ recent performances is a huge boost. And as always, the support from our fans is phenomenal. We are sticking with the same team,” Patidar commented.
