Tamim Iqbal Stable After Suffering Heart Attack During Domestic Match

Former Bangladesh cricket captain Tamim Iqbal has regained consciousness and is showing signs of recovery after suffering a severe heart attack during a domestic cricket match Monday.

The 36-year-old opener was leading Mohammedan Sporting Club in a Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League 50-over match when he experienced acute chest pain, prompting an emergency hospital transfer that medical officials say likely saved his life.

“He is now better. He talked to his family members and also walked briefly at the hospital,” confirmed Mohammedan club official Tariqul Islam in an update that has brought relief to cricket fans worldwide.

Mohammedan physiotherapist Enamul Haque told AFP: “We had to go to hospital quickly to save his life, and luckily we did that.” This swift action proved crucial as hospital medical director Razeeb Hasan later revealed Tamim was in critical condition upon arrival, requiring immediate surgery to insert stents to clear a blocked artery.

The cricket fraternity has rallied around the Bangladeshi legend with messages of support flooding social media platforms. Longtime teammate and fellow Bangladesh cricket icon Shakib Al Hasan wrote: “Please pray that my brother Tamim recovers quickly and returns to the game!” Shakib, who turned 38 the same day as the incident, noted he couldn’t celebrate under the circumstances.

Former India star Yuvraj Singh offered encouragement: “You’ve faced tough opponents before and come out stronger, this will be no different. Wishing you a speedy recovery. Stay strong.”

Tamim’s health emergency has shocked the cricket world, particularly given his reputation as one of Bangladesh’s fittest and most dedicated cricketers. The left-handed opener enjoyed a distinguished international career spanning from 2007 to 2023, representing Bangladesh in 391 matches across Test, ODI, and T20I formats.

As one of Bangladesh cricket’s most celebrated figures, Tamim amassed over 15,000 international runs and holds the distinction of being the only Bangladeshi batsman to score centuries in all three international cricket formats. He also served with distinction as Bangladesh’s ODI captain before his international retirement last year.

Medical sources indicate Tamim will remain under observation for several days as doctors monitor his recovery. The Bangladesh Cricket Board has reportedly arranged for specialized cardiac consultations to ensure the national hero receives optimal care during this critical period.

Cricket fans across Bangladesh have organized prayer sessions for Tamim’s recovery, highlighting the immense respect and affection he commands in his homeland. The incident has also sparked conversations about cardiac health in professional athletes and the importance of regular screening.
