Trent Boult Claims 30th First-Over Wicket in IPL, Extends Unique Record

Mumbai Indians’ pacer Trent Boult has once again demonstrated his prowess in the Indian Premier League (IPL), claiming his 30th wicket in the opening over of an IPL match. This latest achievement came during Mumbai’s first home game of the IPL 2025 season against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

Boult dismissed KKR opener Sunil Narine with the fourth delivery of the match, sending him back to the pavilion for a two-ball duck. This strike not only showcases Boult’s ability to make an immediate impact but also extends his lead at the top of the chart for the most wickets taken in the first over of IPL matches. Boult now boasts 30 wickets from just 96 matches, significantly ahead of India’s Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who has 27 wickets from 126 matches.

The top five bowlers with the most first-over wickets in IPL history are:

  1. Trent Boult – 30 wickets (96 matches)
  2. Bhuvneshwar Kumar – 27 wickets (126 matches)
  3. Praveen Kumar – 15 wickets (89 matches)
  4. Sandeep Sharma – 13 wickets (78 matches)
  5. Deepak Chahar – 13 wickets (77 matches)

Boult’s early strikes have been a crucial weapon for his teams in the IPL, and his performance against KKR further cements his reputation as one of the most feared opening bowlers in the tournament.

In the match, Mumbai Indians skipper Hardik Pandya won the toss and elected to bowl first. Mumbai made strategic changes to their lineup, including the introduction of Will Jacks and a debut for left-arm pacer Ashwani Kumar.
