Uganda Cricket Team Welcomes New Coach Ahead of T20 World Cup Debut

Sharma steps up to the plate as the new head coach for Uganda, succeeding the recently departed Laurence Mahatlane. Interim coach Jackson Ogwang will continue to serve as an assistant as Uganda prepares for its inaugural appearance at the T20 World Cup.

Despite not having represented his country in the field, Sharma boasts an impressive record with Delhi and Railways. His coaching prowess has been demonstrated through his tenure as the fielding coach for India A and India’s Under 19 team.

Sharma, who has recently arrived in Uganda, is eager to lead the African nation’s cricket team.

“I am deeply appreciative of this opportunity to guide a group of talented cricketers,” Sharma expressed.

“Having spent just a few days in Uganda, I already feel at home. The people are warm and welcoming, and the environment reminds me of India.”

Uganda has been placed in Group C at the T20 World Cup, alongside co-hosts West Indies, New Zealand, Afghanistan, and Papua New Guinea. Sharma is optimistic that his team can stir things up and spring some surprises at the tournament.

“Based on the data, we have missed a few opportunities in the field,” Sharma observed, referring to Uganda’s performance in November’s African leg of qualification that secured their place at this year’s T20 World Cup.

“Despite these missed chances, we still managed to qualify for the World Cup.”

“Imagine our potential if we rectify these shortcomings. With improved game awareness and mental strength, we can compete with the world’s top teams on any given day.”

Uganda’s first match at the T20 World Cup will be against Afghanistan in Guyana on June 5.
