Washington Sundar: ‘I’m Ready for Any Opportunity’ Ahead of England Test Series

Washington Sundar: ‘I’m Ready for Any Opportunity’ Ahead of England Test Series

MUMBAI: For Washington Sundar, the past year in the Indian Premier League (IPL) has been a test of patience. The introduction of the Impact Player rule in 2023 has often seen the versatile off-spinning all-rounder sidelined in favor of specialist players. In the IPL 2024 season, Sundar played just two matches for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), and despite a match-defining knock of 49 off 29 balls against SRH on April 6 while representing Gujarat Titans (GT), he featured in only one of five games for GT. Yet, the 25-year-old Tamil Nadu star remains unfazed, focusing instead on the upcoming challenge of a five-Test series against England this summer.

In an exclusive interview, Sundar reflects on his limited opportunities, his aspirations for the England tour, and the invaluable guidance from coaches like Gautam Gambhir and Ashish Nehra. Here are the key highlights:

‘Tactics Decide Playing XI, But I’m Prepared’

Commenting on being benched by GT despite his explosive performance against SRH, Sundar emphasized the tactical nature of T20 cricket. ‘Everything depends on the conditions and the opposition. In this format, you need to be equipped with all the skills to adapt. I understand it’s tactical, and whenever my opportunity comes, I’ll be more than ready,’ he said with quiet confidence.

England Series: A Massive Challenge

With the highly anticipated India-England Test series on the horizon, Sundar is eager to make his mark. ‘It’s a series of five Tests, and it’s going to be a massive test for all of us—mentally, physically, and skill-wise. I’d love for us to dominate and win the series. Right now, my focus is on improving every day,’ he shared. India’s last Test series against England in 2021-22 was a fiercely contested affair, with India leading 2-1 before the final Test was postponed. Sundar, who has shown his mettle in Test cricket with performances like his memorable 123-run partnership with Shardul Thakur at The Gabba in 2021, is hopeful of contributing to a potential series triumph.

Impact Player Rule and T20 Selection Struggles

The Impact Player rule has undeniably reduced opportunities for all-rounders like Sundar in the IPL, potentially affecting his chances in India’s T20 setup. However, Sundar remains pragmatic. ‘I just focus on getting better and being in my best rhythm whenever I get a chance. My goal is to win games for my team, whether in IPL or for India,’ he asserted. His adaptability and calm demeanor suggest a player unwilling to let external factors derail his ambitions.

Praise for Rising Star Sai Sudharsan

Asked about bowling to GT teammate Sai Sudharsan in the nets, Sundar couldn’t hold back his admiration. ‘His talent is incredible, and the way he’s translated it into consistent performances this season is amazing. His approach and mindset stand out, and I believe there’s so much more to come from him,’ Sundar noted. Sudharsan, who has been a revelation for GT with over 500 runs in IPL 2024, continues to impress with his composure and technique.

Coaching Influence: Gambhir and Nehra’s Impact

Sundar credits much of his growth to the mentorship of Gautam Gambhir (India head coach) and Ashish Nehra (GT head coach). ‘Having coaches like them makes a massive difference. They help you understand your strengths and how to approach different situations. At GT, we spend hours on the field—sometimes five or six hours per session—which helps immensely. Their knowledge and experiences have shaped me a lot,’ he revealed.

Competition in Indian Spin Ranks

India boasts a wealth of spin talent, with players like Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, and Axar Patel dominating the landscape. Yet, Sundar downplays the idea of competition. ‘There’s no competition in cricket. It’s about being in your best form when the chance comes and contributing to the team’s success. I focus on the little things that can create a big impact,’ he said wisely.

Memorable Test Moments

Reflecting on his Test career, Sundar found it hard to pick a favorite moment. ‘Every experience has been unique. Whether it’s the 123-run stand with Shardul at Gabba during India’s historic win in 2021 or taking 13 wickets against New Zealand in Pune, playing Test cricket for India is a massive blessing. Contributing to the team’s success at the highest level is everything,’ he said with gratitude.

As Washington Sundar gears up for the England series, his resilience and focus shine through. Despite IPL setbacks, the all-rounder’s hunger to perform for India remains undiminished. With a blend of skill, determination, and the right mentorship, Sundar is poised to seize any opportunity that comes his way.
