Yashasvi Jaiswal’s Bold Leap: From Mumbai to Goa as Captain for 2025-26 Season

In a surprising twist that marks a notable shift in Indian domestic cricket, Yashasvi Jaiswal, India’s promising Test opener, is set to part ways with his long-time cricketing home, Mumbai, to take on new challenges in Goa. The Times of India has learned that Jaiswal, who has donned the Mumbai jersey throughout his first-class career, will transition into captaincy with Goa for the 2025-26 cricket season.

According to sources close to Jaiswal, "Yes, Jaiswal has decided to move to Goa. He will soon apply to the Mumbai Cricket Association for a No-Objection Certificate to facilitate his move." Jaiswal, aged 23, made his first-class debut for Mumbai against Chhattisgarh at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in January 2019. Over 36 matches, he has amassed 3712 runs, including 12 centuries and 12 half-centuries, predominantly for Mumbai.

Despite his roots tracing back to Bhadohi village in Uttar Pradesh, Jaiswal’s bond with Mumbai runs deep. From sleeping in the Muslim United SC tent at the Azad Maidan to selling panipuris to make ends meet in his early years, Mumbai has been both a crucible and a nurturing ground for his cricketing aspirations. His talent shone brightly at the Rizvi Springfield School in the Harris Shield, followed by impressive performances for Mumbai’s junior and senior teams, eventually catching the national selectors’ eye.

Jaiswal’s recent cricketing endeavors saw him play just a single Ranji Trophy match for Mumbai last season, during which he scored 4 and 26 against Jammu & Kashmir. His latest outing in the IPL 2025 for the Rajasthan Royals has been less stellar, with only 34 runs at an average of 11.33 across three matches, striking at 106.25.

His stellar performance in the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, where he scored 391 runs at an average of 43.44 with a century and two half-centuries in five Tests against Australia, underscored his value to the Indian team. This move to Goa, taking up captaincy in a new environment, signals a bold step as Jaiswal looks to rejuvenate his form and lead Goa to new heights in the domestic circuit.
